SWIFT CURRENT, SK — The Southwest Facility Foundation acknowledges that the City of Swift Current has been unsuccessful in securing federal funding through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, which was applied for in 2024. While disappointing, this setback does not slow us down. Our commitment — and the City's — to delivering a modern recreation facility for Swift Current has not wavered.
As Mayor Al Bridal has stated, our commitment to this project stands firm. The Southwest Facility Foundation echoes that sentiment wholeheartedly
Momentum Is Real
The City of Swift Current has taken meaningful steps forward, including: paying down municipal debt, establishing a dedicated recreation levy, forming a recreation facility committee, exploring new and expanded facility options, lobbying provincial and federal governments, and examining diverse funding structures. These actions reflect a community that is serious, prepared, and moving forward — with or without a federal grant.
The Foundation has raised approximately $5.15 million toward the estimated $36 million project. As General Manager of Community Services, Nicole Spenst noted, the Foundation's contributions are central to making a new build possible. Every dollar raised reflects the belief of donors and businesses across the Southwest that this facility will be built.
“We are driven to see progress with recreational facilities in our area to further support health and social vitality in our community along with boosting economy and tourism.”
— Sasha Godenir, Board of Directors
A Call to Our Community
We are heartened by the support of businesses and individuals across the Southwest. We still have work to do — and we encourage everyone to come together to make it happen. Whether you are a donor, a local business, or a resident who wants to see this built, your role matters.
“Obviously we were hopeful of a quick approval three years ago when we started this, but we have been prepared for declines. The best time to plant a tree was 40 years ago — the second best time is right now!”
— Travis Cuthbert, Board of Directors
The City will continue applying for federal and provincial grants, and the Foundation will continue growing our fundraising base and pursuing new partnerships. This facility will be built. Swift Current's best days are ahead.
